Influence of gypsy moth induced oak mortality on a black bear population

Schrage MW. 1994. Influence of gypsy moth induced oak mortality on a black bear population. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

This study was conducted from June 1990 to November 1993 in Shenandoah National Park, VA. Black bear population dynamics, food habits, movements, and habitat use were measured and compared to data collected from 1982-1985 before significant gypsy moth-caused tree mortality occurred. Physical conditions and ages of bears have not significantly changed since the defoliation. Current bear diets contain more soft mast, and home ranges were smaller than previously noted
