Specimens of California Grunion were collected at Sand Point, Dillon Beach, CA on July 8, 2005. This collection represents a northern range extension for Leuresthes tenuis. The northern expansion of the grunion's range was just one of a number of observations coincident with unusual ocean conditions which were documented during spring-summer 2005 along the West Coast of North America by a number of research teams. The most significant oceanographic event was the delayed onset of upwelling which led to lower than normal primary production. The grunion possibly took advantage of the unusually light winds and favorable ocean conditions of spring 2005 to transit the inhospitable outer coast of Marin County to take up residence in the relatively benign and warmer waters of Tomales Bay.
