This report provides an inventory of weather and climate station locations in and near Northern Colorado Plateau Network park units, results of an inventory of metadata on each weather station, and an initial evaluation of the adequacy of coverage for existing weather stations and recommendations for improvements in monitoring weather and climate. The area covered by the Northern Colorado Plateau Inventory and Monitoring Network (NCPN) is vulnerable to drought and other interannual climate variations, highlighting the region’s sensitivity to possible future climate changes. Because of its influence on the ecology of NCPN parks and the surrounding area, climate was identified as a high-priority vital sign for the NCPN. Identifying the extent of available weather data collected by various governmental agencies provides a basis for designing climate assessments for use in documenting climatic trends, and to aid in interpreting trends in other vital signs monitored by the NCPN.
