Historically, trespass livestock have been a major problem in Big Bend National Park (BBNP). Trespass livestock threaten park resources and compromise visitor experience. In recognition of these facts, the Friends of Big Bend National Park funded the continuation and expansion of a pilot project conducted in early 2006 which significantly reduced trespass livestock numbers by using nontraditional, innovative, low-stress livestock management techniques. The grant project funded by the Friends of BIBE ran from January 17 to April 11, 2007. The goal of the project was to implement an in-park team trained in low-stress livestock management (which consists of low-stress livestock handling techniques, natural horsemanship, and ranch roping) which would significantly reduce trespass livestock numbers.
