The Delaware River Basin occupies an area of 12,765 square miles, in portions of south central New York, northeast Pennsylvania, northeast Delaware, and western New Jersey. The Delaware River begins as two streams, the East and West Branches, in the Catskill Mountains. They flow in a southwesterly direction until they meet at Hancock, New York. The length of the river from Delaware Bay to the confluence at Hancock is about 200 miles. New York City’s Delaware system impounds Delaware tributaries in three reservoirs: Cannonsville Reservoir on the West Branch of the Delaware River, Pepacton Reservoir on the East Branch, and the Neversink Reservoir on the Neversink River. Approximately 650 million gallons a day (725,985 AF a year) is moved out of basin from these reservoirs through the Delaware Aqueduct.
