During the last 30 years several of the native fish species in the Virgin River have gone from being fairly abundant to being very rare. BIO-WEST, Inc. is studying to use the database specifically developed to monitor fish populations to answer questions about why the native fishes had declined.... INTRODUCTION The impetus for this study came from several state and federal biologists who have worked on the Virgin River and were concerned about what has happened to the native fish fauna in the last 20 years. A number of stations on the Virgin River in Utah, Arizona, and Nevada have been sampled for fish by the Virgin River Fishes Recovery Team (originally the Woundfin Recovery Team) since 1976. This monitoring effort has generally been conducted in the spring, typically during April or May, and again in the fall, typically during September. These data, along with other collection information from various research efforts and other monitoring studies, have been combined into a centralized database by Dr. Thorn Hardy of Utah State University. Although the database has been available to essentially anyone, and Dr. Hardy has been more than accommodating in assisting those persons that may want to use the database, very few biologists other than Dr. Hardy have actually tried to use the database. Reasons for this include being insufficiently versed in computer software to attempt such a venture, lack of funds, and finding the database was too difficult to use because of its size and complexity.
