A memorandum that responds to the request of Senator Max Baucus for an independent assessment of the threats to whitebark pine and possible management responses to those threats. The memorandum begins with a brief overview of the threats to whitebark pine and the benefits of maintaining whitebark pine ecosystems. This is followed with some background on the ecology of the pine and its ecosystems. The third section describes the five agents that threaten whitebark pine, and some possible responses to control each agent. The last section concludes with a summary of possible restoration activities. A brief list of useful information sources on whitebark pine and its threats, decline, and restoration is appended.
