This document describes the history of the discovery of the bacteria which are the causative agents of Rhinitis and upper respiratory tract disease (URTD) in wild and captive tortoises. The article states that URTD in desert and gopher tortoises is caused by Mycoplasma agassizii. The article describes several studies conducted to determine the causative agent. The paper also describes the clinical signs of infection, modes of transmission, consequences of infection, control, treatment and diagnostic methods.
