Sargassum, an ecologically important brown algae, was used to address evolutionary and speciation issues for Hawaiian marine plants. I produced the first comprehensive taxonomic and biogeographical examination of Sargassum in the Pacific basin. This biogeographic research synthesized floristic and distribution information and revealed patterns in distribution and endemism at both subgeneric and specific levels. The next phase of research developed the technological framework necessary for molecular analyses. This included a reliable, robust DNA extraction protocol, extensive DNA library and appropriae gene system. Examination of the evolutionary history of Sargassum provided many exciting insights into its evolutionary history in Hawaii and the Pacific for the first time. Two colonization events were suggested for the Hawaiian reef flat species with speciation in an east to west direction.
