Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) represents an unquantified pathway between land and sea. Nutrients, organics, metals, and other dissolved materials are added to coastal waters in unknown quantities via this process. Our project is intended to develop and test an aerial infrared survey methodology for assessing the magnitude of SGD on a regional scale basis (10s to 100s kilometers). We are using high-resolution, temperature-calibrated (<0.1oC) geo-corrected aerial infrared surveys at selected sites along an approximately 100-km stretch of shoreline on the west coast of the island of Hawaii. We also performed coastal sampling at two sites: (1) Kahauloa Bay; and (2) Honokohau Harbor.
