In 1958 an investigation of the protostrongylid lungworm-bighorn sheep bionomics in Montana was initiated by the Montana Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit. This study included the collection of land snails and slugs on the canadensis, in western Montana and the determination of hosts for Protostrongylus stilesi, a lungworm parasite of the bighorn sheep. Collections were made on ten areas where infected bighorn sheep were known to occur in western Montana (Fig. 1) with the major emphasis on the Wildhorse Island area.
