Hosts and Distribution of Capillaria bovis (Schnyder, 1906) in Domestic and Wild Ruminants in Northwestern United States

The ruminant intestinal capillarid, C. bovis (Schnyder 1906) has been reported sporadically in the United States in sheep and cattle, with existing records concentrated in the midwestern and southeastern states and in Puerto Rico (Becklund, 1964, Am J Vet Res 25: 1380-1416; Levine, 1968, Nematode parasites of domestic animals and of man, Burgess Publishing Co., Minneapolis, p. 541-555). Other areas of the U.S. in which undetermined Capillaria species have been recovered from ruminants include the central states, i.e., Illinois and Missouri (Szanto et al., 1964, J Am Vet Med Assoc 144: 741-746), Iowa (Zimmermann and Hubbard, 1961, ibid. 141: 706-709); and the northwest (Goldsby and Eveleth, 1954, J Parasitol 40: 637-648 in western North Dakota; Jacobson and Worley, 1969, Am J Vet Res 30: 1113-1117 in Montana; Malczewski et al., 1975, ibid. 36: 1671-1675 in Washington; Tomlin and Brundage, 1972, Agroborealis 4: 20, and Samuel and Gray, 1974, J Wild1 Manage 38: 775-782 in Alaska). These records also include reports of C. longipes Ransom 1911, and C. brevipes Ransom 1911, both of which were regarded as junior synonyms of C. bovis by Gagarin and Chulkova (1971, Trudy Vses Inst Gelmin'tol 18: 47-67). This note summarizes unpublished records of C. bovis sensu lato in Wyoming, Montana, and Oregon and reports its occurrence in additional host species during the period from 1962 to 1976. Records listed in Table I were compiled from fecal examinations in which eggs indistinguishable from C. bovis were found in stools of bighorn sheep, cattle, and bison. Records in domestic sheep and elk were based upon recovery of C. bovis adults at necropsy as well as positive identification in fecal specimens.
