From 1993 through 1995, the environmental consulting firm BIO-WEST Inc. surveyed the lower Virgin River and documented the presence of several native species between Riverside and Lake Mead, including a small but consistent population of woundfin (Plagopterus argentissimus) below the riverside bridge. This paper presents the results of long-term monitoring in these reaches, provides information on trends seen in the fish communities in the three monitoring reaches since 1996, summarizes the results of the red shiner (Cyprinella lutrensis) removal and woundfin stocking experiments from 1999 to 2002, examines the relationship between the ecology of the region and the invasive blue tilapia, and makes recommendations for the upkeep of the diversity of the river.
