In his paper on gypsophilous plants of northern Mexico I. M. Johnston (1941) suggests the desirability of studying the plants of similar habitats in southwestern Texas and adjacent New Mexico. The following are preliminary notes concerning the gypsophiles of the latter area. They are based on collections and observations made by the author during August 1942, June and July, 1943, October 1944 and September 1945, principally in Hudspeth, Culberson and Reeves Counties, Texas, and Chaves and Eddy Counties, New Mexico as a part of a more extensive investigation of the desert flora of this region.
