The only taxa included in this first edition are those for which a serious study has been made in a recognized authority and in which a substantial portion of the species have been identified. Except for a few very large fish that have certainly been seen by knowledgeable people on several occasions (e.g., Manta), all species listed are represented by specimens in the University of Guam Marine Laboratory Reference Collection and/or in the published scientific literature. This is a list of species, not of names; in cases of synonymy, only the most recent valid name is listed.
