During the 2007 field season; mid-May through mid-August, coastal Kenai Fjords National Park was surveyed for avian mortality events attributable to highly pathogenic avian influenza. In conjunction with these surveys, black oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani) and Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) beached bird surveys were also conducted. A mortality event involving yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia) not caused by avian influenza, was observed and documented. In addition to coastal surveys, a park-wide Avian Influenza Surveillance Plan, Respirator Program, and a Respirator Job Hazard Analysis were prepared.
