From the Abstract: "Bull trout have declined throughout the Pacific Northwest to the point that they are now listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Understanding population genetic structure is esential to recovery planning since it provides information on the appropriate unit (stream, tributary, river, basin, etc.) for management efforts. Bull trout population structure was examined in 14 tributaries from 10 bull trout core recovery units in the lower and mid Columbia River, Puget Sound and Olympic Peninsula using 16 microsatelllite DNA loci. High distinction among all tributaries suggested little gene flow among rivers and indicated that bull trout populations should be managed at the level of individual tributary. The study also considered Dolly Varden collections from two tributaries and one lake, all with sympatric bull trout populations, to test for introgression ...."
