To help resource managers better manage the lands upon which they act as stewards and to assist researchers with the knowledge of the faunal and floral constituency of the islands, the Hawaii Biological Survey embarked on a study of the numbers of species that occurred in these islands. In response to the complaint that “you cannot conserve what you do not know”, we scoured the published literature and databased the names of species of all the plants and animals that were reported to occur in Hawai‘i.
