The condition of streams is a direct reflection of the extent of development and other human uses in the watershed. Non-point source pollution--including urban and agricultural run off, treated sewage, and changes in hydrology--threaten water quality and quantity of streams. Because of these threats, streams are among the most vulnerable natural resources in the United States. Furthermore, streams in the Midwestern U.S. are among the most impacted because the long history of land use in this region, including extensive agriculture and development, has influenced virtually all waterbodies in this region. In order to assess the natural and anthropogenic processes influencing invertebrate communities, this protocol has been designed to incorporate the spatial relationship of invertebrates with their associated habitat. Local variables, such as conductivity, water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, current velocity, substrate size, and other habitat variables will be measured.
