This report on the availability of fire information in the UCBN addresses a need of the Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) program to summarize existing information about natural resources and identify resource threats for each park in the network. The purpose of this project was to locate current and historic fire data associated with the UCBN parks and to provide access to this data to aid in project planning and decision-making. When comparing available fire data, it is clear there are some discrepancies in both numbers of fires and acres burned. This indicates that a better method of recording fire occurrence and area burned needs to be created to ensure fire history data is more accurate in the future. While some NPS units began fire monitoring as early as 1978, most did not. After the 1988 Yellowstone NP fires, there was a strong push for monitoring the effects of fires. This led to the creation of the Fire Monitoring Handbook, and subsequently, Fire Management Plans for fire-affected parks. Not all parks in the UCBN, however, have current Fire Management Plans or monitoring data. This document summarizes many sources and contacts of fire information to assist managers in fire monitoring in UCBN parks in the future.
