The 2005 Annual Report of the Fire Effects Monitoring at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument summarizes the results of the 2004 field season, including prescribed burns in the Sheep Rock Unit of the Monument. The purpose of the burning is to reduce juniper and sagebrush density in areas where file exclusion and grazing have altered vegetation communities and ecosystem processes. By year two post-burn, shrub density had decreased 79%, exceeding the monitoring objectives/goals. Juniper density decreased 13.7% in this time frame, meeting the minimum reduction goal. Resource staff advise against increasing burn frequency to increase the juniper mortality rate and have implemented thinning instead to minimize shrub mortality and non-native grass/forb establishment.
