This brief report discusses how air quality is measured at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. The Iowa department of Natural Resources (IADNR) is responsible for measuring air quality and insuring attainment. The IADNR measures six pollutants; total suspended solids (TSP or PM 10) sulfur dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and lead. The measurement is taken from Cedar Rapids so the levels are higher, but the park is well within standards. According to the Resources Management Plan, a strong odor is noticeable from the hog confinement area adjacent to the park. She recommends a temporary monitoring station or periodically sample the West Branch air quality.
