The Calabasas Landfill, a cooperative effort of the County of Los Angeles and the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, is an integral component of the Los Angeles County regional refuse disposal network. The landfill is located near Agoura, California, north of the Ventura Freeway (U.S. 1 01 ) in Los Angeles County. The landfill seeks to provide environmentally sound and cost-effective management of solid waste for area communities. The Calabasas Landfill is currently operated as a nonhazardous municipal solid waste landfill in compliance with federal, state, and local standards. In operation since 1961 , the landfill was established 1 7 years prior to the creation of the SMMNRA. Based on the above, the specific purpose and need for this project are as follows: • Purpose - To protect resources and visitor use and enjoyment within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. • Need - To continue operation and preserve the permitted waste disposal capacity of the Calabasas Landfill as a necessary component of Los Angeles County's solid waste management system.
