At least twelve ponds at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park are classified as anchialine, thereby possessing measurable salinity and dampened tidal fluctuations but lacking a surface connection to the sea. Anchialine pond water results from a mixing of sea water with fresh groundwater inflows and the natural quality of water varies between ponds. Because the anchialine pond water at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park largely does not originate within park boundaries, it is susceptible to contamination from nearby commercial, industrial and residential sources. A three-step process of (1) general synoptic inventory, (2) fixed-station characterization of pond dynamics, and (3) long-term, low-intensity sampling is recommended to characterize and monitor pond water quality.
