The National Park Service requested, in 1965, that the U. S. Geological Survey assist in the design of, and conduct the testing of a lateral well near Try Yard Creek, Ocracoke Island, Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area, North Carolina. The National Park Service desires a campground site in the general area of Parkers Hill and Try Yard Creek but previous investigations indicated that conventional wells could not be used to recover the available fresh water necessary for a campground without inducing salt-water encroachment. Therefore, it was decided to test the use of a shallow lateral well as a source of fresh-water supplies. Planning, construction, and testing of the lateral well was done during 1965.
