Situated on high bluffs commanding a mighty bend of the Mississippi River, Vicksburg, Mississippi, held a position of great military and economic importance to both Union and Confederate governments at the beginning of the Civil War. For 14 months the city's defenders successfully turned back every Federal threat to its security, finally succumbing only when the rigors of a 47-day siege by large land and naval forces proved overwhelming. The story of those 14 months and the final siege is told in the following pages. The narrative is derived from an earlier work by William C. Everhart, onetime historian at Vicksburg National Military Park.
