This interim report summarizes the work accomplished during the 1953 field season of the Katmai Project. The authors note that, "most of the detailed scientific reports are still in preparation...", and the findings are necessarily preliminary. The Katmai Project was a combined effort of several government agencies and university participants. Its purpose was to appraise 1) the area's geographic and climatic conditions; 2) changes in shore morphology; 3) volcanic activity, general geology, mineral resources, and glacial action; 4) plant and animal life; and 5) human use of the area prior to Mt. Katmai's 1912 eruption. Summaries are presented for studies on geography and climate, geomorphology, volcanology, botany, entomology, ichthyology, ornithology, mammalogy, and archeology.
