From the Introduction: "The inquiries that led to the following chapters were undertaken to gain a deeper understanding of these two important domains of knowledge -- environmental science and environmental policy. Chapter One investigates vegetation patterns in riparian areas inside Olympic National Park, USA using principles of scientific inquiry. Chapter Two examines salmon recovery issues in the Puget Sound region from a policy perspective. Both chapters deal with issues of watershed management, and are related in their search for solutions to environmental problems: in one case, a search for patterns of natural conifer regeneration on river floodplains (restoring conifers to floodplains is an important issue in the Pacific Northwest); and in the other case, analyzing ways to make the institutions managing recovery of endangered Chinook salmon more effective."
