Popovich SJ. 2008. Survey Efforts, Resulting Interim Checklist, and Vascular Plant Database for the NPSpecies Vascular Plant Inventory Initiative, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, Arco, Idaho. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve
This summary document reports accomplishments for Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO) in fulfilling the National Park Service’s NPSpecies Initiative goal of documenting at least 90% of vascular plant taxa known or suspected to occur in the park. Work, which began in the mid-1990’s, was divided into five strategies: 1) assemble and review all relevant literature and internal data concerning plant information for park, and conduct limited herbaria searches and interviews with knowledgeable staff and local past collectors, 2) incorporate all past specimen collections, 3) conduct field surveys sufficient to reach 90% documentation of known or suspected plants and assign confidence in results, 4) create a properly-curated working herbarium in the park, and 5) populate the NPSpecies vascular plant electronic database, including all three sources of evidence – vouchers, observations, and references – and create an organized, thorough plant checklist that list all plants present, probably present (called “suspected” in the checklist, which is a more accurate term), encroaching, unconfirmed, historic, and falsely reported for the park (using status definitions established by the NPSpecies database rules).
