The Hawai`i Forest Bird Survey (HFBS) was conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service between 1976 – 1981 to determine the distribution, abundance, and status of native Hawaiian forest birds and their habitats. Although the main focus of the HFBS was on birds, it also included components to map the plant communities within all of the study areas, and to collect detailed information on the native and alien plant species and ungulate impacts along all of the study transects. While the results of the forest bird surveys and several of the botanical components have been analyzed and published, much of the detailed information for many of the native and alien plant species surveys had not been retrieved from the field data sheets and analyzed. As part of the National Park Service’s Inventory and Monitoring program, datasets such as those produced during the HFBS are being compiled to serve as baseline information against which to track future change in the natural resources within each park. This report summarizes the creation and population of a relational database to house and manage all of the HFBS botanical data collected within and adjacent to (up to 1 km outside) Hawai`i Volcanoes and Haleakala National Parks on the islands of Hawai`i and Maui, respectively. A total of 1,203 records were entered into this database with information on the composition and structure of the plant communities, as well as data on the presence and impacts of feral ungulates recorded along each transect.
