The primary purpose of Pu`ukohola Heiau National Historic Site is to preserve and restore where appropriate the physical remains, historic scene, and the natural environment of the site and to interpret its role in the ascendancy of Kamehameha the Great and the formation of the Kingdom of Hawai`i. The site is intimately associated with Kamehameha I, and with the process that elevated him from one of many rulers in a remote Pacific archipelago to unquestioned King of a unified nation of Hawai`i that rapidly became the commercial crossroads of the Pacific. At this site and because of this temple, Kamehameha's sphere of influence expanded from an island district outward into the Pacific Basin. He influenced the actions of major maritime nations in the Pacific, the consequences of which have shaped the course of history, not only in Hawai`i and the United States of America, but in the world.
