The National Park Service (NPS) is charged with managing park natural resources and preventing their loss or impairment. NPS established the Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring Program to provide funding and technical support to help park units collect scientifically credible ecological resource information and to develop or improve field and analytical monitoring techniques to aid park managers in protecting their natural resources. As a first step, 5-year inventories were initiated in the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) to gather core sets of data describing park vascular plants and vertebrate resources. In 2001 NCCN, The Institute for Bird Populations, and Western Washington University initiated a two-year avian inventory of North Cascades National Park Complex (NOCA) to elucidate spatial patterns of abundance in the park for a large suite of species, and to produce information to assist park managers and cooperators in developing NOCA’s long-term landbird monitoring program. Three primary objectives were 1) Determine bird-habitat relationships across NOCA, 2) field test and evaluate a sampling method and survey design for inventory and monitoring avian populations in areas with diverse habitats and limited access, and 3) gather data to facilitate predicting avian responses to habitat changes due to land management practices. During 2001 and 2002, 1,551 point counts were conducted along 229 transects and 116 species were detected. For 58 species that were detected during at least ten point counts, habitat-specific density estimates, corrected for species- and habit-differences in detectability, were calculated. Park-wide maps of distribution and abundance for each of these species, and estimates of their park-wide abundance, are presented.
