A protocol to establish guidelines for annual monitoring of indicators of lake chemistry for lakes in the Sierra Nevada network (SIEN) network of the National Park Service (NPS) is currently in the development stage. In order to assist in setting realistic long-term monitoring goals, a power analysis was conducted to determine the power to detect trend in lake chemistry analytes over time. Power analyses are helpful in determining sample sizes that will provide information to detect changes in the population of interest over time at the desired level of change. Factors such as sample membership design, revisit designs over time, detection limits, and components of variation were considered when conducting this power analysis.
