Effects of Mechanical Noise and Natural Sounds on Visitor Experiences in Units of the National Park System: A Review of the Research

Gramann JH. 1998. Effects of Mechanical Noise and Natural Sounds on Visitor Experiences in Units of the National Park System: A Review of the Research. Taxas A & M University. College Station, TX

Although it is often considered intangible, natural quiet is a management resource. In the National Park Service's Report to Congress on aircraft oversights (NPS 1995) several pieces of legislation and NPS policy were reviewed which identify natural quiet as a park resource to be protected. This paper summarizes theory and research concerning noise impacts on visitor experiences in national parks.
