Caves of Pu’uhonua o Hönaunau National Historic Park (PUHO): An Overview

During the months of March, April and May 2008, a cave team from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park documented seven caves at Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park (PUHO). PUHO is located on the southwest edge of the Big Island of Hawaii. Caves documented at this park were thoroughly mapped and received several different surveys in an effort to detect resources unique to each cave environment. These surveys succeeded in identifying geological, biological, archeological and paleontological materials in specific cave zones with the use of mapping stations. Data from these surveys will be used by Pu’uhonua o Hönaunau National Historic Park (PUHO) in the management of its caves.
