BARK BEETLE CONDITIONS NORTHERN REGION 2008
Gibson K. 2009. BARK BEETLE CONDITIONS NORTHERN REGION 2008. USDA Forest Service. Missoula, MT
A summary of forest pathogens in the USFS Northern Region Area for 2008. A relatively wet winter in 2007-2008, coupled with another dry summer, resulted in a mix of weather conditions, some of which were good for land managers and homeowners, others for bark beetles. Wetter conditions in the spring have probably kept Douglas-fir beetle and pine engraver beetle activity at relatively low levels; however, there were increases in both in 2008. But a warm and dry summer continued to make life good for some bark beetle species—and they took advantage of it!
