Interpreting mean chemical ratios from simple random collections of snow-urine samples

Sargeant GA, White PJ, Vanderbilt White CA, Garrott RA. 1995. Interpreting mean chemical ratios from simple random collections of snow-urine samples. Wildlife Society Bulletin. 23(4):705-710

Urea nitrogen:creatinine ratios in urine-soaked snow samples were lower for adult female elk that for adult males or calves, indicating that the traditional use of mean snow-urine ratios from simple random collections to assess nutritional status is inadequate. There is also an unexplained high within-animal variability in urea nitrogen:creatinine ratios over short periods.
