In this report we begin to lay the foundation for developing a Colorado Plateau legacy studies network of PJ woodlands on National Park Service lands. First we detail the resources required for legacy studies to better understand how PJ woodlands have changed on Colorado Plateau in the last 150 years. These resources are primarily cartographic including General Land Office Records, historic maps, historic photographs, and miscellaneous legacy resources from both peer reviewed and non-peer-reviewd literature. Second, we provide an assessment of the current distribution of pinyon-juniper woodlands, including maps which delineate the major types of PJ and juniper woodlands found in individual parks and monuments, as well as overlays of bark beetle infestations that resulted from the 2002-2003 outbreaks.
