Of the 244 known desert tortoise shells from the Arizona Strip District, 58 were available and in a condition to be considered for this study. Mortality figures included predation and scavenging (53%), gunshot wounds and other traumatic injuries (19%), intraspecific competition, and unknown causes (22%). Not all tortoises were able to be sexed, but 40% were male, 22% were female. O f the tortoises unable to be sexed (22 individuals), 5 were adults, and 3 were hatchlings.
