From the Abstract: "The impact that hiking trails have on the environment and the impact that the environment has on hiking trails have been studied extensively. It is well established that surface water erodes trails. Few studies, however, have linked the role that the surrounding landsurfaces have on the natural drainage patterns and trail degradation. The goal of this research was to examine the effects that hillslopes (using of the Nine-Unit Hillslope Model) have on trail degradation in various biophysical environments representative of Olympic National Park, Washington. In order to accomplish this, a continuous survey of degraded trail segments along with associated variables, was conducted."
