A number of relict areas have received recognition and protection via special administrative designation on federal lands in the past sixty years. Most of these have been in the Pacific Northwest. Several natural areas have received special designation in the Colorado Plateay region, though probably without such thought to how these sites would contribute to a system of such reserves. In 1981 the Nature Conservancy began working to build a system of natural areas in Utah. Virtually all of these effort have involved cooperation with federal land management agencies, as about two-thirds of Utah's land, and to an even greater portion of the remaining "wildland" are administered by the federal government. The progress to date has involved two separate processes: 1. Identification and 2. Protection.
