A plethora of water quality studies has been conducted on the North Fork over the last few decades, by many different researchers working for various institutions, in both Montana and British Columbia. Large amounts of data already exist, but are scattered and lack the organization required for in-depth scientific inquiry. Given the ecological importance of the river and the effects that coal mining in its headwaters will have, a centralized data archival and retrieval system of water quality data will be extremely useful for tracking the ecological changes that occur. The goal of this project was to organize as much water quality legacy data as currently available into a single scalable database system, the North Fork Database, and to make that data accessible to researchers via the World Wide Web in a convenient format.
