Here I will discuss the hyporheic zone and how nutrient concentration is greater in surface water at upwelling sites than downwelling sites. Describe the Valett et al 1994 paper. Hypothesis: nutrient diffusing substrates deployed at downwelling sites will have more extreme nutrient limitation than upwelling sites. Prediction: periphyton biomass on N and/or P and/or N+P will be greater than C.
