Macroinvertebrates community assemblages in floodplain habitats are extremely diverse. These communities were studied to find factors that most affected the distribution patterns. Flow regime turns out to be the biggest influencing factor controlling the habitat preferences of these communities. Flow regime is among the most important factors because how easily flow regime can change the overall structure of habitat both though abiotic factor and biotic factors. Substrate, for example, is greatly influenced by the flow of a system, and has been found to the be the second largest factor controlling distribution of macroinvertebrates across floodplain habitats.
