From the Abstract: "The abrasion of friable weathering rinds during the downstream transport of fluvial sediment is investigated as an explanation of observed downstream fining rates in rivers, previously considered too large to be caused by abrasion processes. A tumbling mill test, performed on sediment collected from the Hoh River in Washington state, revealed that the abrasion rate of weathered sedinent exceeds the fining rate measured in the natural river, while the abrasion rate of unweathered sediment is too low. The fining rate observed in the river was used to determine the relative proportions of weathered and unweathered sediment in transport. The proportions are comparable to proportions observed in recent deposits. A second investigation sought to compare relationships in the river to hypothetical relationships which are based on the likely effects of weathering rind abrasion on downstream fining."
