The spatial distribution of tumuli on a lava flow may be quantitatively linked to subsurface inflation processes, and may imply information about the subsurface. There are three possible flow emplacement styles for the distribution of tumuli. This study applied the Poisson theorem to a sample of the tumuli distribution data from the 1969 flow off of the fissure vents near Mauna Ulu, in order to determine whether the distribution of tumuli were of distribution type one or type two. The results suggest a type one distribution, but a more in-depth study is needed to confirm these results.
