The effectiveness of ponderosa pine forest restoration was tested by comparing forest restoration treatments to untreated forest and to reconstructed forest structure in 1870. Forest density averaged more than 20 times the historical tree density and basal area was 4-6 times higher in contemporary forests than in historic forests. Following restoration treatment (thinning and prescribed fire), tree density was reduced to 6 times historic levels and basal area was reduced to 2.5 times reconstructed levels. Ponderosa pine dominance was not significantly changed after treatment. Litter and duff were reduced but woody debris increased.
