A relatively new concept to make the latest scientific information accessible to the public is to combine U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth and biological science with the National Park Service (NPS) interpretation. Because staff in National Parks often lack extensive expertise in Earth science, they typically rely on published information from scientific or popular literature for geological interpretation. Unfortunately, much of this information is highly technical, biased, or out of date. One solution to this problem is to promote joint publication of "Fact Sheets," concise, 2- or 4-page, well-illustrated interpretations of specific natural science topics. Fact Sheets are an effective means of quickly and clearly communicating scientific explanations of Park features to the public. Readers of these publications learn how to better understand the natural wonders of Parks. Careful review and edit are especially important with such Fact Sheets because they must present a clear, unambiguous message to the visitor.
