As part of the on-going prescribed fire program at Bryce Canyon, Resource Management staff have developed a program to determine fire effects on vegetation and fuel loads. The following procedures should be used as permanent monitoring plots and collect data prior to conducting prescribed burns. Methods generally follow the procedures described in the Western Region Fire Monitoring Handbook (NPS 1990). Data should be collected during summer, when most plants are flowering, and plant cover is at its peak. In 1989 and 1990 these procedures were generally followed to set up plots and collect data in the Residential Area, Corral Meadow Edge, Paria North, East Creek Meadow Edge, and Paria South Study areas. However, methods varied to some extent each year, so specific postburn data collection instructions that have been documented for each of these study areas should be followed to ensure comparability.
