Geographical and climatic limits of needle types of one- and two-needled pinyon pines

Cole KL, Fisher J, Arundel ST, Cannella J, Swift S. 2008. Geographical and climatic limits of needle types of one- and two-needled pinyon pines. Journal of Biogeography. 35(2):257-269

This study focused on the anatomy of individual pine needles regardless of species. Needle types were compared across precipitation histories. Four types of needles were identified. Needle types appear to reflect the seasonality of precipitation; however the parent plants were less easily characterized.
